As a wedding photographer for 10 years these are 10 things I wish I could tell every bride, groom, and couple for their wedding day:
2. Don’t stress about the dress. Fussing over every wrinkle and smudge removes the joy. Yes try to keep it clean and nice, but you bought it to live in. Don’t spend money on something you won’t make memories in.
What a privilege to have stains from wine drunk giggles, dirt from photos you’ll cherish for a lifetime, makeup stains from the fingertips of loved ones hugging you and leaving a forever reminder of the best day.
3. The more buffer time in your wedding timeline, the better your experience will be.
4. Family photos crave organization. Make a family photo list in advance (with first names), in the order you plan to shoot. Start with extended family and dismiss those you won’t need anymore.
5. Set aside 10 minutes for just you two together after the ceremony. Be in present is more important than anything else.
6. Don’t have the person getting married go last for hair and makeup. Second or third from last in fine in air conditioning.
7. Clean and collect items in the getting ready suite 10 minutes before photographers arrive.
8. Have your details collected and ready before photographers arrive.
9. Give speeches a time limit of less than 5 minutes. This serves you and your guests best and allows the speaker to have everyone’s full attention.
10. Spend time with your partner on your wedding day. Dance together, hold hands during cocktail hour, spend your day next to your person.
